What do cruise ships do during hurricane season?

I’m going on one in 3 weeks thru the western carribean stopping at grand cayman islands, belize, cozumel and others. What happens if hurricanes are forcasted and on there way thru where the ship is on in the ocean or if it’s going thru one of the ports we are supposed to stop at? Any experienced cruise travelers, can you please tell me if you’ve faced this before?

They watch the weather very carefully, of course, which is always done. If the ship needs to change course it does. The Captain is responsible for the safey of the passengers, the crew, and the ship, and always takes that responsibility most seriously. I have been on ships during hurricane season several times, and simply don’t worry about it! (You have a much bigger risk in being able to fly into the port where the cruise begins, and even that is minimal.) Deciding not to go on a cruise because of the remote possibility of a hurricane is the same as deciding not to visit the Midwestern US from April to October because of tornadoes!

It’s sort of like flying. If they can sail through it or around it, they will. If it’s a particularly nasty storm, you may stay at your previous port of call or drop anchor elsewhere until the you can navigate safely to your destination.

The Captain is always well aware of any hurricane activity in his area and will take the appropriate steps to stay out of its way, for the safety of his passengers and his ship.
This may mean having days at sea instead of port calls, doing the ports but in reverse order, or going somewhere else entirely. There was one cruise out of some port on the East Coast that actually went up to Canada/New England ports instead of the Eastern Caribbean because there was a hurricane forecast to come straight up the East Coast.
