Cruise Vacations – Selecting Your Cabin
Many people on use their cabin for a few hours of sleep, to shower and to change clothes. If if you are going to use your cabin for this purpose on your cruise vacation, you will still need to choose the right cabin. Having a good cabin is an important part of your trip and should be chosen carefully.
First of all, expect your cabin to very small. This is not a typically size of a motel room, think smaller. Forget what you see in the pictures of brochures and newspapers. The brochures will use larger size rooms or use angles to make a cabin look more spacious. Try to imagine your cabin as you would your bedroom. What exactly do you need in there? If you are planning on staying in your cabin the majority of the time, then you should tell your travel agent this so you can get a more spacious layout. Of course, space is very valuable on a cruise ship and a larger cabin, or suite is going to cost you extra. If you are only looking for the bare essentials, then a smaller space won’t be much of a burden to you. It’s better to get an understanding of how much space you’re actually going to get before you open the door to your cabin. Many people are disappointed when the they open the doors to the cabin and discover that it’s TINY.
There are different styles of cabins, mainly, interior, exterior and suites. Interior rooms mean no window, exterior means a cabin that is looking outward and has a window and suites a larger rooms that typically have balconies. Make sure that a lifeboat is not blocking your view when booking an exterior room. Exterior cabins cost more than an interior and it would be shame if your view was blocked due to outer obstacles. Typically, it doesn’t matter if you book a higher or lower deck for regular cabins. Higher decks costs more but the size of the rooms are about the same as a lower deck, so why pay more for something that is just a few floors higher? If possible, do not book a cabin that is below a disco, near the elevators, or public facilities. These areas tend to be very noisy and will not allow you to rest. Instead, request a room away from these areas and book through a travel agent so that they can offer you the best room according to your price. Another tip is to book early so that your special cabin request is granted.
If you are on a honeymoon and decide on a cabin, ask whether there is a queen sized bed or twins. Many times, people go to their cabins and are quite angry when they notice that the twins beds are bolted to the floor. If you want to sleep together, make sure to request a room that has a queen bed as twins typically cannot be pushed together. Also, if you want to go the “extra mile” try booking a suite with a private balcony. Many suites have balcony’s but not all of them are private. Some overlook the pool or other public areas, which can ruin the romantic atmosphere that you are shooting for.
Now that you know a little about booking a cabin on your cruise vacation, why not take the next step and seek a travel agent?
