How to deal with the family on a cruise ship trip

In normal circumstances we will all admit that we love our family dearly. They are the people that we have grown up with and they tend to understand us better than anyone else. However some of the most virulent arguments ever are the ones that involve family members. The cruise ship trip is a long journey and if you do not take the time to handle the family well you could end up on silent terms during the journey home. Here are a few tips that can help you to maintain some sanity on the holiday:

1. Discipline issues should be handled by the parents or nearest guardian. Picture this scenario where the children are going wild and you are on a cruise to the Bahamas. The parents decide that they are not going to do anything about it. The instinct would be to resolve the problem but in reality it is often easier to just ignore it. You should only intervene if the children are a danger to themselves or the other members of the family. Even then you should always involve the parents or the responsible guardian. That will make for a pleasant cruise ship trip.

2. Try not to interfere in the private lives of grown relatives. Once they are eighteen then there is very little that you can do about their personalities. You simply develop coping mechanisms to ensure that they do not drive you mad. If you try to correct them retrospectively you might end up being hated with a vengeance. It is not worth your time to go through some sort of correctional procedure on the cruise ship trip. What is done is done, as Lady Macbeth would say.

3. Separate the teenagers from the group if you are to have peace. There is something that happens to teenagers on the cruise ship trip and you really have no adequate explanation for it. They might become very moody and uncooperative. You just have to ensure that they are safe. They will normally organize their own entertainment in due course.

4. Make sure that the elderly members of the cruise ship trip are not forgotten. As you plan all the energetic activities you should ensure that there are people that are less capable of physical tasks. You should take them into consideration and make arrangements for their entertainment on the cruise ship trip.

5. Everyone should contribute their fair share to the cruise ship trip. This will prevent all the arguments about money. You should agree what the budget is and then ensure that all activities are transparent. On the practical side of things you should try to live in separate cabins if you can afford it.

6. Take all the accidents in good spirit with a sense of humor. They are normally character building experiences and you should be able to survive them. Not everything will go according to plan and you should not fret if his inevitably happens on the cruise ship trip.

Top 5 Reasons A Cruise Is A Great Venue For A Family or Friends Gathering

September 14th, 2010 No Comments

Are you planning a family and friends gathering and looking for a great venue? For purposes of this discussion we’ll define “gathering” as four to five couples traveling together and looking for a unique vacation experience. I’m not neglecting large family groups as that’s the subject of another article. Without getting into price comparisons with various vacation alternatives, here are the top five reasons you should consider an ocean cruise on at least a mid-sized vessel. A mid-sized ship these days is one that accommodates around 2,500 passengers, double occupancy.

5. You have a very high probability that all of your participants will enjoy themselves. There’s a 95% satisfaction rate with a cruise according to surveys done by the Cruise Lines International Association. The reason behind this high rate will be evident in the next four items.

4. There’s always some activity going on that will appeal to everyone–both while at sea and in port. For example, you might be going on an excursion to Mayan ruins with your brother-in-law that your wives have absolutely no interest in. The reverse is probably true for a shopping trip. On a sea day, part of your group can be a wine-tasting class, while another is playing bridge, getting a massage, working out, or just relaxing with a good book.

3. You will be entertained. Where else can you go out for a nice show just by taking a short walk from your room every night while on vacation? There are multiple lounges on board to cater to multiple dancing tastes too. Maybe one or two couples like salsa while others go for smooth jazz or the piano bar-or even karaoke. You can all go your separate ways and meet up later–or not!

2. You will eat well. Now I don’t mean you can pig out. You are more likely to try different dishes on a cruise that you would not order in a restaurant. Why? Because there’s no risk. You know that if you don’t like something you can always ask for something else…and you’ll get it. Try that in a restaurant. One time I couldn’t decide between two appetizer choices, so the waiter brought me both. I did share them, by the way. It’s quite common for a waiter to also do that with an entree or dessert.

1. Happy wife…happy life. When you really listen to the women in your family, they will tell you that the only time they can relax from food shopping, meal preparation, laundry and housework chores completely is on a cruise. With a gathering, even finding a restaurant to accommodate everyone can be difficult. Otherwise, for the homemaker, it’s the same old stuff–just a different location! Answer this question and the decision to take a cruise will be easy: Who deserves the vacation the most in your family? When you pick a cruise for that extended family gathering, the homemakers in the family will appreciate it the most as they finally will have the time to do their own thing, too.

Going for a cruise with family is something special with respect to family bonding. The cruises today are also arranged in such a way that they would cater the family member and especially the kids of all the ages. There are different kinds of activities and education programs which can develop interest in children. There are approximately 60 or more cruise lines which can be screened for serving kids.

One has to consider the ages of his children while exploring the activities and programs provided by the cruise liners. One should ask his kids about their ideas for entertainment. Children do have their own opinions, so one should not underestimate them.

There are many cruise companies on board which are eager to be the best in serving families especially the children. It may be a difficult task to choose the best cruise amongst the good ones for children. There are different itineraries of different cruise companies. Some of them are really good for infants, toddlers, teenagers are pre-teens, etc. Ships also differ from each other. Thus one is advised to go on a newer one while taking the kids along with him. One can also ensure about the provision of baby-sitting so that the parents may have some time for them.

Nowadays, most of the cruise lines have developed a method of dividing the children according to their age. They may have groups like 3-5 years, 6-8 years, 9-12 years, preteens and teenagers. This method can ensure that each and every kid is attended and entertained properly. The age group specific activities can be introduced to that particular group. One should check whether the cruise he is looking for, has this provision or no.

Teenagers love sports and adventures. They become restless soon. So one should see that the activities like rock climbing, roller blading, ice skating, mini golf, etc are there for entertainment. If these activities club with water sports, ball games then nothing shall be like that.

One should also see if the cruise provides family suites. This shall be comfortable for those who have small children as these children need an attention. One should also check if the cruise offers television channels and board movie shows. Children enjoy the screen time and they surely will not miss their favourite show.

One can go for the programs sponsored or created by big companies like Fischer Price and Crayola. These programs are worth watching. They are excellent and well equipped for children.

Now the important part of the cruise is the food offered by them. All children love eating. Especially when they experience the fresh air and wind on the ship then surely their appetite is going to improve. Thus the cruise should provide the fresh and delicious food which would be loved by the children generally. If one serves the common and boring food then surely the children will not like them.

After all one should see in a child’s point of view while choosing a cruise. There many things to take care like facilities, amenities, arrangements of rooms, food, etc.

If you are taking the family away for a holiday, there is nothing better than booking a Summer Cruise, a very popular choice. This is not just an activity to be enjoyed by the family. Often newlyweds will leave their honeymoon till the Summer months so they can get away when the weather is more favourable.

Summer is the favourite time of the year for the family to enjoy a long or even just a short cruise. The children are on their long school holidays in the summer, so the family have more flexibility as to when to book ahead for their holidays together. Older couples find that Summer Cruises are more suitable for them. They can get about easier in the warmer months with plenty more activities that they can enjoy – that’s what cruises are designed for!

There are cruise packages which take you from San Diego and travel down to Baja, Mexico, and you can also go from Vancouver for a cruise up to Alaska. Both of these holidays are very popular choices. These places are of course considered short trips for a cruise, so there are more options if you are planning to take a longer cruise.

Ship cruises also offer exciting destinations like the Adriatic or the Mediterranean. Head to France and Venice which is where these cruises will take you to, ideal places for a honeymoon or a romantic getaway.

If you’re looking for something totally different, why not venture out to a place which is rarely talked about for a holiday cruise – Greenland and Iceland. Try this out of the ordinary trip. Check out the wildlife in their natural habitat, which are normally only seen at some of the larger zoos. You’ll see marvelous sights like the musk oxen, the polar bears, the wild caribou and get a glimpse of the lemmings. These cruises let nature lovers live their absolute dream for about two weeks, with trips where they go onshore to get a close up and experience the wilderness surrounding them. You will get a chance to check out the beautiful glaciers and large icebergs down the fjords and the waters.

For something warmer, away from the chill, take a Mexican cruise where you’ll visit the Yucatan Peninsula. Be astounded as take an inland trip to the ruins of the Mayan culture. There are breathtaking beaches to be found on the Yucatan Peninsula, you just won’t believe your eyes.

There is also the great choice of seeing the wonders of the rain forest by travelling to Panama or even Peru. There are even offshore trips that will take you to the villages so you can explore the fantastic sights, or enjoy some snorkelling near the beaches.

Everyone should at least take advantage for a once in a lifetime trip on a Summer Cruise and make the most of it. Book early to ensure a place whatever destination you decide to pick, an exciting cruise to look forward to with lots of fun!
