Parental Controls on Domain Vista

If you are running Vista Home Premium or Ultimate on a domain, you will notice that Parental Controls is not longer available as an option in the control panel. To enable this after joining a domain, you will need to modify the local computer security policy. Keep in mind that you can only apply such restrictions to non-administrator accounts. Here is how to get it back on again…

1. The Windows Key or click the "Start" orb and type "gpedit.msc" and hit enter (you could also use the traditional run dialog by hitting "Windows+R" but I'm liking the start field for this purpose in Vista.

2. You'll need to acknowledge a UAC prompt if you have it enabled, just click "continue"

3. Navigate to: Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Parental Controls

4. Here you should see one setting: "Make Parental Controls control panel visible on a Domain"

5. Double-click the setting and select "Enabled"

Note: the change did not take place right away. I ran GPUPDATE from the command line and I did not see the change. If you are not in a rush it will appear in an hour or so-- otherwise a reboot is always a good trigger for change.

To join a domain go to:

Control Panel > System and Maintenance > System

and click the "Change Settings" icon below "Computer name, domain and workgroup settings"
