Crashes: Does Vista Really Find a Solution?
It is kind of a tease: yes your application is crashing, but maybe we will find you a fix...
Every time I try to create a hyperlink in FrontPage 2003, it crashes...
The message: "Microsoft Office FrontPage has stopped working" "A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
I've seen crashes before and the message tells you that if a solution is found it will inform you, but I've never seen it actually say it found a solution-- until this time.
On one system that I had upgraded, Office 2003 was installed with FrontPage and after the upgrade, I started seeing this problem. The bad part is I hit "CTRL-K" almost as a matter of habit to create a hyperlink and I'm having a hard time stopping myself from doing it. I figured it was a problem with the upgrade but then I saw the same on a fresh system where I had installed office 2007 and then installed FrontPage 2003 as an individual product. When it crashed on this system, it actually said it found a solution (click here for screen-shot). I was very happy as I sat back waiting for the Office updates to apply themselves. However, the check must have simply been to see if I had the latest known patches applied (not if there was a solution for my particular problem) because the problem persists.
I've found some others complaining about the same thing, but no fixes. It has been reported that a uninstall/reinstall can correct the problem, but not for everyone. Of course, you can type the hyperlink code in the code area yourself, you just cannot hit use the right-click/hyperlink or CTRL-K GUI options to pop up a browse dialog where you would normally select the target and have the hyperlink code inserted for you.
In case you had not heard, there is a good reason you can't find FrontPage 2007 out there-- it is being replaced by a new product from Microsoft named "Expressions", read more about Expressions here.
Have you seen this problem? Do you have a solution you can share with the rest of us?

Just wanted to say that I am having the exact same problem when using FrontPage 2003 on Windows Vista. Here is the error message I get: "A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." This happens when trying to create a Hyperlink in FrontPage 2003 - it happens when I click on the hyperlink button. I don't know if the latest automatic updates may have caused a problem? I haven't been using FrontPage on Vista for very long. The error just happened today - March 1, 2007.

I, too, just started having the same problem under vista. I had previously installed office 2007, then, after 3 weeks of trying to fix problems with it, uninstalled it completely (I thought) and reinstalled office 2003, including frontpage 2003. I was actually able to do some web work with frontpage (I did have to give up on running frontpage extensions on my own pc) including adding hyperlinks, but just last night, I started getting that "microsoft office frontpage has stopped working" message mentioned above. I've done a "detect and repair" but that didn't help. Nor did erasing frontpage temp files, nor did recalculating hyperlinks (2 things that have almost always fixed mysterious problems in the past). I've just ordered an xp disk from Dell. Hope I don't have to use it.

Yes! Last night I set up my new dell computer running Vista. Today I installed frontpage successfully. But the moment I tried to hyperlink as usual, same error message everyone above mentioned...downloaded the "patches" without change. Plus there is not a compatability wizard program as in the windows xp....any solutions?

I also had the same problem with the hyperlinks not working. The problem is that windows firewall blocks the comunication to the server on that port so you can tell windows firewall to stop blocking frontpage 2003 or just shut of the firewall. I hope this helps alot of people.

I am having the same problem with Vista.

...yes Microsoft has admitted it is a 'bug'.
Me thinks the bug is they want you to upgrade to Expressions. Problem is, all 24 of my clients like using FrontPage because of ease of updating their sites.
Guess have to show them how to use Dreamweaver now.

I too had a compatibility problem with Vista vs Front Page, so I downloaded the trial version of MS Expressions. Guess what?! Same problem. It not only crashes a LOT, but it automatically messes up my hyperlinks and when I try to repair them, Expressions crashes again!
Solutions PLEASE kindly.
thanx

Yes, same darn problem here. Come on Microsoft, fix this problem ASAP so that we can get on with our lives.
Thanks,
Mike

Same problem. One of my co-workers tried Expression and said that it completely hosed immediately after launching. Not very stable at all. We only use FrontPage when we have to (annoying FrontPage extensions) and strongly encourage users to switch to Dreamweaver. One more reason amoung many I guess. I hope someone is able to post a solution though.
Thanks,
Joe

"Plus there is not a compatability wizard program as in the windows xp....any solutions?"
There is a compatability wizard in Vista.
To locate the compatability wizard;
Open the start menu, Click "control panel" (insure it is in control panel home not classic veiw) click the heading "Programs", then, click on "use an older program."
I dont know if this helps, as I am using Dreamweaver :)

To resolve this problem, add FrontPage to the list of Internet Explorer compatible programs. To do this, follow these steps:
Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry
Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. Locate the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Application Compatibility
3. Right-click Application Compatibility, click New, and then click DWORD Value.
4. Type Frontpg.exe, and then click OK to name the DWORD value.
5. Double-click Frontpg.exe.
6. In the Value data box, type 1, click OK, and then quit Registry Editor.
You could also go to:
http://www.95isalive.com/fixes/index.htm and download
the FPcleaner and run that program.

This appears to do the trick! Thanks Bill!
Here is a quicker way to do the same:
From a command prompt running as administrator run the following command:
reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Application Compatibility" /v Frontpg.exe /t REG_DWORD /d 1

I've been having similar problems as well. Not with Frontpage, but with pretty much any program. Firefox and iTunes in particular will crash at any given time. It happens alot when I'm streaming video. I get the same message "Firefox has stopped stopped working." Then I get the option to close, restart, or wait for response. It tells me that MS is searching for a solution, but the solution is always "This problem was caused by firefox. Please check their website for a solution to the problem." This has not been helpful and it happens so often and is so frustrating that I don't even acknowledge it any more. I just restart and keep going.
Also, IE 7 won't do anything. It opens up and instantly freezes. But I can't uninstall or repair because it is integrated into Vista. Unless there is some way that I don't know about.

Adam,
I've seen problems with certian steaming video files and not others. I also tried watching the same video in Firefox and saw the same error, but later in the video. I don't have access to that video any more, do you have a sample that generates the issue (or do you see it all the time)?
For IE freezing up, that's a new one to me. Perhaps it is a misbehaving addin? This is really too much to discuss here: please post whatever details you can to this site's forum and we'll pick it up there.

I tried running the reg edit solution, but when I click the start button, I don't have "run" as an option-- I tried both left and right click. I have an HP Pavillion dv6000 running Vista. Hoe do I get to a command prompt as administrator? I need to fix this frontpage problem ASAP!
thanks.

Julia, for the run menu you can press the Windows Key and "R" at the same time. You can also add the run command to your start menu by right-clicking on the task bar, choosing properties and then clicking the "Customize" button on the start menu tab. You'll find "Run command" about half way down the list, just check this box it to have it show up.
However, you are going to want a command prompt with elevated privilages. For that check this article

Has anyone gotten FP 2003 to run under VISTA when trying to create a hyperlink on anything other than a local website. There are comments about it working for some people or possibly clearing up with a reinstall, but I haven't seen anyone state that they actually have it running properly..

Jeff,
No solid solutions, but you'll find more on FrontPage compatability here

Thanks, but I think you missed the gist of my question. Can someone confirm that "anybody" has been able to get FP 2003 to run well under VISTA. I'm in correspondence with an editor at Information Week and am trying to determine if this affects only some or all users.
Tnx, Jeff

Jeff, the link I provided is focused on this issue alone (whereas this is only a related topic). If you'll look I think you will find that it does affect everyone and that nobody seems to have a fix that works for all users.
